The odd attempts of humor leave me cold in the bland and pervy world of DH. I am in awe at how bad the writing is. The hookers of Sin City and Firefly had volition, direction, spunk, guns and enough character to light up a galaxy. The victimized rufee-hookers of DH are annoying when they baby talk and just plain sad when they prance around gussied up as school girl tartlets. Perhaps if the Actives were less wooden, or were actual character actors they’d be more dynamic, but they are the PWTs (Pretty White People) that Fox, WB and UPN specialized in, sans personalities. The show is goofy when it means to be serious, pathetic when it tries to be sexy and wooden when it tries to thrill. I’d rather watch wallpaper dry, or jello set, or grass grow. The only good thing about the show is Miracle Laurie; she manages to outshine Dushku in every scene. Even after the producers dressed Mellie in sack cloth and flattened her hair to make her less appealing she still managed to steal the show. Whedon’s shows are great for discovering talent; Mellie is in the only character worth rescuing in this shabby little house of cards.

I actually enjoy Dollhouse and wasn’t big on Firefly… not really sure how you can count Buffy in with the whole “canning too early” issue since it had a long run. But I do hate Fox and networks for messing with good shows and canceling them without giving them enough chance. Tru Calling was absolutely excellent, but it had a bad time slot so it had bad ratings thus got the boot. By the way, Dollhouse has had thee worst time slot ever — no one that would really enjoy this type of show is sitting at home at 9:00 on a Friday evening, Fox!!

Fox and CW have got to be the worst networks for canning shows because they have “bad” ratings, and it’s usually their fault ratings aren’t high. You put a show in a horrible time slot, and it’s not going to get high viewers no matter how damn good it is.

Joss should have let a small network pick Dollhouse up; at least they would give it better chance of survival then what Fox appears to be doing.

Also: I agree that Fox’s previous handling of Firefly was reprehensible but I couldn’t really blame them if they can this show. Basically, we’re watching the female “Active” characters, stripped of any sense of volition, engaging in sexual encounters with strangers most weeks (Tim Minear said the Dollhouse was virtually “a whorehouse” in his comments on True Believer). That is, we’re watching zombies being raped for our entertainment. What magical arc resolution could ever redeem that? Oddly, the flashes of Whedonesque humour and elements that occasionally brighten up the confused scripts seem really out of place and the most Whedonesque character of the lot, Topher, is positively repulsive. Something has really gone wrong if one of the best TV writers of his, or any, generation, whose wit, humanity and intelligence used to light up out screens, is making my screen crawl with stories that simply do’t make sense.

Heh. I’d love to buy the DVD the moment it appears but it will be of no use to me- I need a Region 2 version! For which I’ll have to wait till even longer, than people from the States.

Firefly was brilliant but, overall, let’s face it, Dollhouse sucks – even after the much-vaunted mid-season “game changing”. Apparently it’s supposed to a comment on the exploitation and objectification of woman. Pity those are two of the crimes it’s guilty of. The premise seems ill-thought-out and all the stuff we’re getting in the sixth, seventh and eighth weeks should have been in the first two episodes. There are no sympathetic characters in the show, with the possible exception of Boyd, and the leading lady plays a character who a) had a previous personality, a cookie-cutter animal rights protester, which was tedious beyind words and b) currently has no personality whatsoever. Despite the reassurances that this has nothing to do with Dollhouse’s chances of renewal, I don’t think Fox would be scrapping the finale, or would have put it out on a Friday in the first place, if they ever had any intention of renewing it. Their sucky PR strategy, if that’s not too grand a word, shouts out: we don’t care about Dollhouse. Whedon’s previous three shows were sparks of genius – I don’t think Dollhouse is in their league or anywhere near it. To be honest, I’d like to see something new much more than sit through a second series of this or mourn the passing of a finale from the writers of Stage Fright, an episode so bad it made several top Whedon fans I know stop watching the series entirely.

buffy, futurama, Jericho, firefly ~ networks (FOX) don’t know what they’re doing. Webisodes, pay sites, no networks – this is the future I hope Whedon embraces. That way he can air the pilots and finales he wants – like a creator SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO!

They’re not leaving us any choice but to abandon ship, or resort to piracy.

Way to raise interest for the DVD.
Like people wouldn't buy it anyway.
Like those who will want to download it wouldn't do it anyway...
I'm rather speachless with anger right now.
This is just a low blow aimed for our wallets.
Probably all the artificcial buzz created by Fox 'thinking' if season 2 was possible, was also only a ploy meant as to make us want the DVD more.
